Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

night-at-the-museum-2Ok, I admit it… I watched this. I honestly don’t know why. And as I’m writing this about two years after I saw it… I can’t really remember it. It was the kind of thing where halfway through, I wish I could have turned to myself to say “hey, what are you doing? Shouldn’t you be cleaning the crud out of your toenails or something?”. Ya, I probably should have done that instead.

I suppose the only reason you might want to watch this is if you’re just dying to know what happened the characters after the first movie. Ya…

The Big Year

When this came out, I was turned-off by the negative reviews. But, I do have a soft spot for birding, so I figured I’d give it a try… Wow – what a pleasant surprise! I’m not sure what it was the critics didn’t like. The movie had an interesting premise, good acting, a few laughs and a lot of charm. The characters were multidimensional – we got to see them work to balance their love of birding with the loves of their lives, and the movie just had a real good balance and pace. It’s hard to find honest, uplifting movies that aren’t totally sappy. This one delivers.

One other thing I really appreciated; this movie respected the audience. It wasn’t filled with ridiculous gags you don’t believe, and it didn’t resort to making up bird species with silly names.  The humor was thankfully reigned-in by honesty. And the little tidbits of truth thrown-in, like the Snowcocks in the Ruby Mountains (there is an established population of Himalayan Snowcocks only in the Ruby Mountains – and you can bet that any birder looking for species would seek them out), the trip to Atu, and the role the seasons & weather played in the plot… that is what made the movie. I just have to say “thank you” to everyone involved in this for making it right.

Bottle Rocket

This movie was indeed a lot like a bottle rocket… wandering aimlessly, but amusingly for a while, then finishing with a bang. To which, the viewer smirks, shrugs, and says “hmm”… or perhaps “huh”. It follows the exploits of a couple 20-something slackers, and their really poorly-thought-out plan for success through petty criminal mischief.

Midnight in Paris

Only Woody Allen could pull off a movie with a plot as goofy as it is good. In fact, this movie is perhaps best at its goofiest. As for that plot? A writer on the verge of marrying a high-maintenance rich girl time-travels back to paris in the 20s & hangs out with historical characters who are caricatures of themselves. He has this illusion that “some other time” is far more interesting than his own present. But, eventually comes to realize that every time is the past of some other future. It’s just hard to see the perspective from where we stand. So, make the most of right now! It’s a message that we can’t hear too often… and one that’s charmingly done here.

The Roya Tenenbaums

Fun movie about a family of characters. Every character in this movie has some serious “issues”… but they’re all so wacky one just has to laugh. Something about this movie reminds me of how sometimes when you fly from Cleveland to Chicago, you have to go through Atlanta – Is that funny or sad?
