What Dreams May Come

I really liked the concept of this movie – we all make our own afterlife, whether it’s heaven or hell is up to us. That makes a lot more sense than the dictatorial / judgmental Christian view. Well, none of it makes sense anyway, but I did like this movie. There were some annoying parts, but the movie was visually interesting enough to overcome any writing or acting shortcomings.

Popeye

I suppose it had to be done. I guess it couldn’t have been done a lot better either. One of the few movies where Robin Williams isn’t “Robin Williams”. This doesn’t even compare to the really old b/w popeye cartoons from the 30’s though, where he’d beat up on people for just looking at him wrong – before the Hollywood morality police took over.

One Hour Photo

Nearly perverted & nearly freaky… I was actually quite happy that the movie didn’t end with a bloodbath. Strange how a mellow ending can be a surprise ending. I really liked the set they created for the Walmart-lookalike store though, almost more like a medical lab. One thing though, I thought the photos the woman took were too well-done for her character – they were obviously done by a professional photographer, who was probably too proud to take mediocore photos… or just didn’t think of it.

Good Will Hunting

I think my favorite scene in this movie was the first time that the Robin William’s character ‘gives it’ to Will. I’ve never heard the “you don’t know everything kid” speech done so well… I guess that’s cause the kid does “know everything”… except what can’t be learned in books. I think this movie really says that we all have something to learn. Just think, if you ever reached that point where you did know everything there was to know, what would be the point anymore? What would you do? I think the actual character of Will wasn’t important, it was the development of that character which was most interesting. I could take the more cynical approach and just mark this one off as another “abused kid overcomes his problems”, but I think this movie is better than that. (I would like to know if the actual math problems were real though)
