Tron (the new one)

With some movies, you have to go in knowing what to expect. I was expecting a wild ride of special effects… And this movie delivered. I heard some reviews of this movie deriding the sometimes nonsensical, predictable, illogical plot. Plot? Pfft. Come on. It was good enough to shoulder the 3D fireworks. I cared about the characters a little… Enough. Sure a few tweaks might have made this a transcendent movie with a message and all that, but whatever… It was entertaining, and that’s all I was looking for.

True Grit

A movie has to be really confident in itself to be this straightforward and get away with it. It’s almost like this one was saying “in your face. Here’s what gonna happen, and you’re gonna enjoy it”. And I did.

The Big Lebowski

Nice indeed to think that the dude is out there, takin’ ‘er easy for the rest of us.  I see in the dude, any of us… most particularly me, or at least what could be me, with a little more or less effort.  I have to say that based on my own experience, there is a lot of prejudice out there regarding the “unemployed”.  Lately, people have asked me, “what do you do?” although I really think they’re asking “who are you?”.  When I respond “nothing.”, I invariably answer the wrong question.  They assume that I am indeed nothing.  Anyway, sorry for delving there, I just mean that I identified with the dude on a higher level.  Although I don’t personally see the attraction of bowling, I see how the dude could.  Every man has his nirvana.

White Squall

It took a while to “get going”, but it was OK. I think this movie suffers from what I call “little picture disease”. No matter how well it was done, it was nothing more than a little story about a unique series of events. It doesn’t really “comment on the human condition” or something like that. I know, not all movies have to do that, but it’s too bad that they all can’t. One thing… so is there such a thing as a white squall?

K-Pax

I’m not going to attempt to guess whether K-Pax was really an alien or not, I’m willing to admit that I just don’t know. Whatever you think, this was an entertaining piece of work. One thing I didn’t get though, did the Jeff Bridges character really need to fly to New Mexico to learn about Prot? He could have just called.
