Priceless

This is one of those movies where I find it hard to sympathize with the main characters. One of them is a completely heartless gold-digger. The other has too much heart, and not enough sense. Still, even with that, it’s very watchable, and it did get a little better toward the end… And there were some funny scenes, and it’s always a pleasure to watch Audrey Tautou work her magic. In a sense, I guess I could sympathize with the plot from that aspect… Even though her character was despicable, I found it hard to turn away.

Coco Before Chanel

wonderful epic period piece about the birth of modern fashion. Best part for me was how the popular culture changed through the movie… It wasn’t just coco who was coming of age, but all of us. I wasn’t too “big” on the secret revealed at the end… Whether is was true to life or not, it just seemed kind of contrived and unnecessary. Though, if it was indeed true to life, I guess it was kind of necessary… But didn’t need to be presented as this big secret…

Amelie

Amelie decides to help all those around her by doing sneaky little tricks, etc. But, when she finds herself doing the same thing for herself, she doesn’t know how to “close the deal”. It’s an incredibly cute little film, filled with a lot of quirkiness… which is always a good thing for a film to have. Who couldn’t fall in love with Amelie? The world needs more people like Amelie… and more films like Amelie.

The DaVinci Code

I was certain I would find this really dumb, but I actually liked it. Maybe it was just the effect of low expectations? I cared about the characters, and enjoyed the performances. Even though the general ending was fairly obvious about half-way through, there were still enough surprises along the way to keep one’s interest. Of course, the general premise… with the giant conspiracy, and all the puzzles, etc. is just well… kind of stupid. But, you just have to put that aside for a couple hours.

A Very Long Engagement

A beautifully filmed piece of art, but unless you speak French, this was so hard to follow! Also, I felt a bit cheated by the ending. It’s a totally over-used cliche. I won’t say exactly what happens, because despite that major flaw, it’s still very much worth seeing just to “see”, in fact it may be worth seeing twice so you can “understand”.

He Loves Me… He Loves Me Not

Girl is insanely in-love with an older married man… or is she just plan insane??? An interesting presentation, though I thought they could have been a little more clever – I sort of figured it out before the secret was “revealed”. Strange, this was subtitled in French, but I was just thinking that I don’t really remember reading any subtitles. Is that good or bad? Good, I think.

Happenstance

A cute movie that is growing on me more now that it’s over. For a while it was really dialogue-heavy, which is difficult with a sub-titled film. But, it was really well thought-out, and the bits really didn’t seem contrived. Basically, it’s about all the little odd bits of happenstance that happen over the course of a day that bring two people together. If not for any one of these things, they might not have ever met. Makes me wonder about all the things that have brought me to my current state of affairs… and wonder if any little randowm things I’ve done have altered the course of others lives… make me feel both powerful and powerless at the same time.
