Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

April 2007: Exploring Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Into the Anza-Borrego
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park covers a huge area in south central California. This is a view toward the east of the park, the town of Borrego Springs (which is surrounded by the park) lies in the valley below.
Cholla Light
The rising sun lights some Cholla cactus in the Anza-Borrego mountains.
Color Among Thorns
It's been a particularly dry year in the desert. Normally, the hills are alive with color in the early spring, but this year - nothing but brown. Still, a couple of miniscule late rains did seem to bring life to some cactus flowers.
Desert View
The low thin plants of the desert afford expansive views of the landscape.
Anza-Borrego Night
At night, there is nothing to obscure a night sky filled with a universe of light.
Down the Slot
This small slot canyon in the southeast part of the park is called simply "the slot".
Through the Slot
A hike through the slot generally starts a the top end, and heads down-stream. The area with the thinnest slot formation is just a couple hundred yards long, but the whole canyon and surrounding landscape is fun to explore.
Up the Slot
If you visit "the slot", be sure to pay close attention to where you are - all the roads in the area are unmarked (at least as of April 2007), making it a little hard to find, but the roads are in good shape, and the hike is easy.

Where is it?

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is located in south-central California. Park headquarters are on the western outskirts of Borrego Springs.

Before you go...
Spring is the most enjoyable time to visit... Though, each season has its character. You can get everything you need in Borrego Springs - a small, but full-service town.
