Lake O'Hara

August 2003: A hike of the Alpine Circuit above Lake O'Hara

click to enlarge   This Prairie Dog lived in a burrow right next to the trail. He barked furiously, but allowed people to approach very close.

click to enlarge   This view of the Lake O'Hara region from "All Soul's Prospect" shows the route of the Alpine Circuit. The trail starts just on the far side of the lake. It rises steeply far above the tree line, then continues at a constant elevation around the sides of the mountains to the point where this photo was taken. The trail then continues back down to Lake O'Hara.

Where is it?
Lake O'Hara is located in Yoho National Park, in the Canadian Rockies. The Lake O'Hara area is on the other side of the ridge behind Lake Louise in Banff National Park.

Before you go...
The road to Lake O'Hara is restricted. You must park near the highway and take a shuttle bus ~9 miles to the lake. Reservations are required to ride the bus, though you might get lucky and get a stand-by seat if you arrive early enough & not at the very height of the summer tourist season. You can stay overnight at the campground near the lake, in a lodge on the lakeshore, or in an alpine hut above the lake. Reservations are required for all these & fill-up quickly. Contact the park well in advance for details.
