May 2004: Exploring Galiano

Galiano is a long skinny island that
stretches north to south in the east part of the Gulf Islands. Here, the view
extends back to the west. The mountains in the distance are on Vancouver
Island. Galiano was named for Captain Dionisio Alcala Galiano of the Spanish
naval vessel Sutil, who visited the area in 1792. |

Galiano is known for its abundant birdlife.
This bald eagle was keeping watch over Active Pass - a channel that is always
busy with boat traffic. |

This black Oystercatcher was picking limpets
off the rocks near Montague Harbor. He sure had plenty to choose
from! |

A beautiful sunset from near Montague Harbor
closes another tranquil day on Galiano. |

Ok, this photo isn't near Galiano... it was
taken from the ferry that connects Port Angeles with Victoria. But, I really
liked the photo, and didn't know where else to put it! |
