Galiano Island

May 2004: Exploring Galiano Island

click to enlarge   Galiano is a long skinny island that stretches north to south in the east part of the Gulf Islands. Here, the view extends back to the west. The mountains in the distance are on Vancouver Island. Galiano was named for Captain Dionisio Alcala Galiano of the Spanish naval vessel Sutil, who visited the area in 1792.

Where is it?
Galiano Island is located in the eastern part of Canada's Gulf Islands, between Vancouver Island, and Mainland British Columbia. The Gulf Islands are just north of the San Juan Islands in the USA.

Before you go...
Galiano is the closest island to the British Columbia mainland, and frequently visited. It's wise to have a reservation if your're using the ferry to-from Tsawwassen, BC. FYI, Tsawwassen is pronounced "Suh-WAH-sun", and it is the location of a ferry dock located just south of Vancouver, BC - essentially this is the main Vancouver ferry dock.
