Toy Story

Every so often a movie comes along which completely redefines what cinema is. I had been waiting for a 100% computer animated movie for years. What makes this movie absolutely amazing is that it’s a great movie regardless of the animation. The animation just made it totally classic.

Shrek 2

For some reason, I just didn’t laugh so much in this one. Most of the best jokes were repeats of Shrek 1. Still, it was entertaining, and I thought the plot was actually more original & interesting than the plot of Shrek 1.

Over the Hedge

Urban sprawl is eating the soul of this nation, and this movie is telling kids it’s all OK – we can just co-exist. Ya, well what about the roadkill, and pesticides, and that scourge of suburbia – the completely antiseptic, unnatural and dead “green lawn” (I could go on and on about how I hate the concept of lawns). This movie would have been much better as a full-on tradgedy.

Monsters Inc.

A fun premise, great animation & all… but there was something missing that left it short of the benchmark set by Pixar’s earlier films. I think it’s a simple matter that the jokes just weren’t as clever… or maybe the timing was a little off… I mean there was so much potential that I expected to be blown-away. Still, it was a fun movie & entertaining & worth a view.

Ice Age

Felt pretty formulaic, not as creative as I’d hoped. I can see a bunch of writers sitting around a table saying stuff like, “what’s funny when it’s cold?”, and somebody pipes up, “snowball fights”, another voice says, “getting your tongue frozen to the ice”, etc. Of course, I did really like the whole bit with the squirrel-thing who was trying to hide the nut though!
